Who moved the stone? Historical evidence for the resurrection

Why Does the Resurrection Matter?

  1. Strengthens Christian Faith: Exploring historical evidence reminds believers that their faith is not blind. The facts surrounding the empty tomb are compelling and nourish confidence in the gospel.

  2. Equips Us to Answer Questions: Friends and family often ask how anyone can be sure of Jesus’ resurrection. By learning these evidences, Christians can offer thoughtful, fact-based responses.

  3. Central to Christianity: The apostle Paul states bluntly in 1 Corinthians 15 that if Christ has not been raised, Christian faith is pointless. Everything stands or falls on whether Jesus physically rose from the dead.

Five Common Explanations (and Why They Fail)

  1. Joseph of Arimathea Moved the Body

    • Idea: He used his new tomb only briefly and then moved Jesus elsewhere in the dark.

    • Problems:

      • No sensible motive for a rush to relocate the body overnight.

      • A guard was posted—why would they keep guarding an already-removed body?

      • Seven weeks later, uproar in Jerusalem would have been instantly stopped if Joseph produced the body.

  2. Authorities (Roman or Jewish) Removed It

    • Idea: Government officials transferred the corpse for their own reasons.

    • Problems:

      • Romans or Jewish leaders needed Jesus’ body to remain sealed away, not vanish.

      • If they had moved it, producing the body later would have crushed Christian preaching immediately.

  3. Jesus Never Died (the Swoon Theory)

    • Idea: Jesus only fainted on the cross and revived in the tomb’s cool air.

    • Problems:

      • The Roman army excelled at crucifixions; survival after scourging, crucifixion, and a spear wound is unrealistic.

      • It fails to explain how a half-dead Jesus could free Himself, move the stone, slip past guards, and then convince everyone He had truly conquered death.

  4. Women Went to the Wrong Tomb

    • Idea: Confused by darkness, they visited an empty, nearby grave.

    • Problems:

      • Not only women but others (including Joseph, who owned the tomb) would’ve had to visit the “wrong tomb.”

      • Authorities could have led people to the “right tomb” to quell rumors.

      • This was a private burial plot, not a huge cemetery of look-alike graves.

  5. Disciples Stole the Body

    • Idea: The original spin from Matthew 28—disciples sneaked in and stole Jesus away.

    • Problems:

      • Those same disciples were terrified after the crucifixion. They lacked both motive and courage.

      • They went on to suffer persecution and death for proclaiming Jesus’ resurrection—no one willingly dies for a lie they know they invented.

What Really Happened?

All alternative theories fall short. Despite centuries of scrutiny by skeptics and brilliant minds, no plausible natural explanation has superseded the claim that Jesus truly rose from the dead. The disciples’ transformation from fear to bold witness—and the inability of both Jewish and Roman officials to silence Christianity by producing a body—point to one conclusion: Christ is risen.

If you already believe, rest assured that your faith stands on solid ground. If you’re uncertain or skeptical, consider how essential it is to investigate. If Jesus conquered death, then His claims have eternal significance for us all.
