Psalm 12 begins with one urgent word: "Help."

What can the righteous do when the foundations are being destroyed? Psalm 11 asks the question we ask when public life seems to be unravelling, when justice is pushed aside, or when the structure of our own life begins to collapse. The danger may be real. The loss may be painful. The future may look bleak. But David refuses to let fear decide where he will seek safety: “In the Lord I take refuge.”

How can anyone praise God when evil seems to be winning? Psalm 9 does not answer by pretending the world is safer or kinder than it is. David writes as a man pursued by ruthless enemies, close enough to death to speak of its gates. Yet the psalm opens with an outpouring of worship: “I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds” (Psalm 9:1).
